FAQs
What is a custom wedding dress?
A custom wedding dress is a bridal gown designed and constructed from scratch for one bride. At Danielle Frankel, the custom design process is a direct collaboration between you and our atelier, with our master patternmakers and seamstresses crafting each gown to the highest standards of dressmaking in New York City's Garment District. Unlike made-to-order gowns, which are based on an existing design from the collection, a custom gown is designed entirely from scratch. Silhouette, fabric, embellishment, and construction are all created in collaboration with Danielle and the atelier.
How does the custom bridal process work at Danielle Frankel?
The custom bridal process at Danielle Frankel begins with an initial consultation at the studio on West 39th Street in New York City or over video for clients outside New York. During this first meeting, the bride discusses her vision, timeline, and design direction with the client relationships team. Once a clear concept is established, Danielle Frankel works directly with the bride to provide sketches and fabric swatches, considering all elements discussed in the initial consultation. Measurements are taken at the New York atelier or remotely, depending on location, and a timeline is set for the first fitting. From there, the gown is patterned and constructed entirely by hand by the atelier's master patternmakers and seamstresses in the Garment District. The number of fittings varies based on the gown's design and complexity.
How long does a custom wedding dress take?
The timeline for a custom wedding dress at Danielle Frankel varies based on the complexity of the design, fabric sourcing, and the number of fittings required. Brides planning a wedding should book their custom consultation as early as possible to allow time for the full design and construction process. Once a concept is established and measurements are taken, a timeline is set for the first fitting. From that point, fittings and timelines vary based on the gown's design. For made-to-order gowns from the existing Danielle Frankel collection, the standard lead time is approximately 24 weeks from order date.
How much does a custom wedding dress cost?
Custom wedding dress pricing at Danielle Frankel varies based on design complexity, fabric selection, and embellishment. Because each custom gown is a unique creation, designed, patterned, and constructed by hand by master patternmakers and seamstresses in the New York City atelier, pricing is discussed during the initial consultation. Contact the Danielle Frankel custom studio at custom@daniellefrankelstudio.com to discuss your vision and schedule a consultation or fill out the Custom Studio form on our website. Made-to-order bridal gowns from the existing collection are listed with pricing on each product page.
What is the difference between custom and made to order?
Made to order means an existing Danielle Frankel bridal gown design is cut and constructed in the bride's size after she places her order. The silhouette, fabric, and design have already been designed by Danielle Frankel. The gown is made specifically for the bride, but the design itself is from the collection. Custom means the wedding dress is designed from scratch. Danielle Frankel works directly with the bride on sketches, fabric swatches, and every design detail to create a gown that does not exist in any collection. Both custom and made-to-order gowns are designed in our atelier located in New York City's Garment District.
Where is the Danielle Frankel custom studio?
The Danielle Frankel custom studio and atelier is located at 260 West 39th Street, Floor 14, New York City, in the heart of the Garment District. This is where all Danielle Frankel bridal gowns are designed, patterned, and constructed. Custom consultations take place at the New York atelier, with remote consultations available over video for brides outside New York. Danielle Frankel also has a bridal boutique on Melrose Place in Los Angeles for collection appointments.
How do I book a custom bridal consultation?
To book a custom bridal consultation at Danielle Frankel, fill in the inquiry form on the Custom Studio page or contact the client relationships team directly at custom@daniellefrankelstudio.com. The initial consultation can take place in person at the New York City atelier in the Garment District or over video. During the consultation, the bride discusses her vision, timeline, and design preferences with the team. For made-to-order collection appointments, book through the Danielle Frankel appointments page for either the New York atelier or the Los Angeles boutique on Melrose Place.
Can I work with Danielle Frankel on a custom gown if I don't live in New York?
Yes. The custom bridal process at Danielle Frankel can begin remotely. The initial consultation, design discussions, sketches, and fabric swatch review can all take place over video. Measurements can be taken remotely or at the New York atelier depending on your location. Fittings are held at the Danielle Frankel Atelier in New York City's Garment District. Most brides travel to New York for fittings, and the team works with your schedule to consolidate visits. Danielle Frankel works with brides internationally, including clients in the Middle East, Europe, and across the United States. For collection appointments (not custom), the Los Angeles boutique on Melrose Place is also available.
Can I customize an existing Danielle Frankel gown?
Yes. Many brides are drawn to an existing Danielle Frankel design but want to adjust specific elements: a different neckline, a change in sleeve length, an alternate fabric, or the addition of lace or embellishment. This is customization of a made-to-order gown, and it's different from a fully custom design. Customization starts with an existing silhouette from the collection and modifies it. Full custom starts from scratch, a completely new design created in collaboration with Danielle Frankel. Customization possibilities can be discussed with your stylist during your appointment.
